Most people look at the new year as a clean slate for self-improvement. With the new decade upon us, why not include some home improvement resolutions too?
Let’s get to it! Brew some coffee, grab a notepad and start making your list. Here are eight ideas to consider.
1. Use Less Energy
Being more mindful with your energy use will lower your footprint as well as save some money. Here are some ways you can do that:
- Turn lights off when you leave the room
- Install LED light bulbs
- Don’t dry clothes all the way through
- Turn the thermostat down at night
- Invest in a smart home system

2. Get Organized—But Not Overwhelmed
Who doesn’t want to start the new year with a clean, organized home? Decluttering can quickly get overwhelming though, so don’t bite off more than you can chew. We suggest going room by room. You can also join in on a decluttering challenge to stay focused!
3. Say No to Single-Use Plastic
From ordering takeout to picking up groceries, it’s time to rethink your daily routines. Cutting back on using single use plastic is an easy resolution to stick to, especially with all the reusable options we have. Check out our post to see where you can cut back.
4. Stay Up to Date on Safety
Make sure you aren’t living with hidden health hazards. Check your house for radon and carbon monoxide—two colorless, odorless gases that are deadly. You can find radon test kits at your local hardware store. If you don’t already have carbon monoxide detectors, they’re a worthy investment.
Also be sure to check if your smoke detectors are in good working order.
5. Tackle More DIY Projects
Challenge yourself to doing more home improvement projects yourself this year. You’ll save hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars. You’ll feel accomplished—you did that! You’ll feel more confident around the home. It’s a win-win-win all around.
6. Keep Things Fresh
Falling into the same routine is a drag, let alone feeling sick of your decor. Next time you’re in a styling rut, try rearranging furniture or adding new art to your walls. It’s an easy way to refresh your space. And don’t be afraid to try something new—you never know what’ll stick!
7. Protect Your Home’s Exterior
We all know it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but maintaining your home’s exterior is important. Make 2020 the year you finally get to that drainage project. Standing water will make its way back to your home one way or another.

8. Start a Home Improvement Fund
Are you planning for a project down the line? A special home improvement fund will help it feel attainable. Set a goal, create your budget and start saving. Be consistent so you can make your dream kitchen a reality.
