Article Intro

Turn an underutilized coat closet into something special.

Here’s a think-outside-the-box project for you: give that small, barely used coat closet a makeover. And no, not the kind of makeover that lets you better organize your outerwear—we’re talking a transformation that completely changes the closet’s function.

With a DIY spirit and a little elbow grease, spare closets can be repurposed into amazing spaces. If you have limited space and want to make the most of it, this project is for you.

Office

Cloffice, anyone? If you’re among the many who have been working from home since the pandemic struck, a closet-turned-home-office doesn’t sound half bad. Open the space by taking doors of their hinges and you’ll instantly have a space that’s enough for a small desk and a computer. For decor, hang floating shelves and a lamp to brighten everything up.

Laundry Closet

Convert your laundry room into a laundry closet. Before you ask—yes, it is doable, but you’ll need to call in a professional to rework the plumbing. Having your washer and dryer neatly tucked away will free up space for more important things. The ladies over at 2 Bees in a Pod worked on this project and their laundry closet reveal is beautiful. The option to close the doors and hide everything makes clutter a nonissue. And you know what they say: out of sight, out of mind…until you run out of clean clothes, that is!

Mudroom

Spare coat closets near an entryway are prime space for a mudroom. Install a bench, coat hooks and floating shelves for a basic but highly functional space. Similar to the previously mentioned laundry closet idea, you can leave the door attached to keep everything out of sight. If you go this route, update the hardware for a more put-together look.

Library

Sometimes a bookshelf won’t cut it. To update your closet, remove the doors and install open shelving to organize your books. Add a comfy chair nearby to create the reading nook of your dreams. Don’t forget the decorative accents to make this a shelfie-worthy space!

Extra Storage

Sometimes you just need the storage space—and that’s okay! Think about what purpose the closet is serving and how you can improve upon it. Install new shelving or racking to make the most of vertical space.

These are just a few suggestions for a DIY closet makeover, so don't let that stop you from getting creative. Do you have young children? Repurpose the closet into a playroom. Love arts and crafts? Make your own little craft nook. Depending on the size and location of the closet, you can transform it into something functional so you aren’t wasting precious space.
