One of the easiest cosmetic changes you can make to your bathroom is replacing old hardware with fresh styles. Not to mention, it’s a quick project you can start and finish within the same afternoon.

Loose towel bars, dusty toilet paper holders and wobbly cabinet knobs aren’t a good look. By replacing these problem pieces in your bathroom, you’re increasing the functionality and beauty of your space.

What to Replace

Towel bars and toilet paper holders are standard hardware pieces you’ll find in any bathroom. If you must replace anything, make it these two necessities, especially if they’re looking worn.

Less commonly found are the towel rings and robe hooks of the world. But just because they aren’t as common doesn’t mean you shouldn’t install or replace them! Most retailers sell these four accessories in a set anyway for bigger savings on your end.

Look at smaller ticket pieces like knobs and pulls as the cherry on top of your redecorating. Since they’re small, they’re often overlooked, but the right knob can add functionality and a nice sparkle to your space.

Why You Should Replace Them

Whether you’re buying an older home or you just haven’t replaced the builder-grade hardware, there’s a good chance you’ve got a nice set of chrome bath accessories. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that, but certain styles scream old and outdated—you know what we’re talking about.

Replacing your hardware, especially in a guest bathroom or powder room, is a welcomed update. Your guests will notice! Another plus is that new hardware opens doors to a lot of modern styles and finishes.

Style Options

The smallest details can make a world of a difference. If you’re big into current home décor trends, then your bathroom probably has a design theme. Whether it’s rustic, industrial, or traditional, your bath hardware should reflect that.

When it comes to finishes, there are two big players: nickel and bronze. Think of nickel as chrome’s sophisticated cousin. Whether you preface it with “brushed” or “satin,” this modern finish looks great alongside any décor style. If you have dark cabinetry or walls, nickel is the way to go.

Bronze has more of an aged look that works with a variety of styles. Traditional, transitional, rustic, you name it – bronze will go with it.

What You’ll Need

Luckily, you won’t need much to replace old hardware. Many complete sets include mounting supplies (screws, anchors and brackets) and cabinet hardware comes paired with a screw. However, there’s always an off-chance a screw might be too short, so it’s always good to have extra on hand.

Other than that, a measuring tape, power drill and screwdriver are often enough to do the trick.
